Atka Bay, Antarctica
This remote corner of the Antarctic is home to over 10,000 breeding pairs of Emperor Penguins. During the long, dark winter, mothers travel far across the ice to hunt, while fathers remain behind, balancing the egg on their feet beneath a protective brood pouch, enduring temperatures as low as -30°C and wind chills reaching -60°C. In these extreme conditions, survival is uncertain, with as many as 40% of chicks failing to survive the harsh winter.
When spring returns, the eggs crack open to reveal downy chicks, small and unsteady against the cold. They perch on their parents’ feet for warmth, tucked beneath a curtain of feathers as the wind sweeps across the ice.
Atka Bay isn’t just home to penguins, it’s where life survives the extremes, and witnessing it firsthand is a privilege few ever experience.
