Last week at Forest Hills Stadium, June Lei — an art worker and the secretary of DC37 Local 1502 — told 13,000 Zohran Mamdani supporters the story of how museum workers in the union fought back against a layoff attempt. Then, she asked the artists and art workers at the rally to cheer.
“The roars rippling through the crowd confirmed what I had suspected,” Lei writes. “This campaign is one of the most significant political gatherings of artists and creatives of our time. With sustained organization, it can be a blueprint. The first step is electing Zohran Mamdani. The next is building a movement for an affordable New York.”
