Zohran Mamdani has officially been elected as New York City’s new mayor, making him the first Muslim person to do so. In his victory speech, he said: “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. He then directly addressed the president, saying: “So Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.” Mamdani endeared himself to many LGBTQ+ voters earlier this week when he showed up at an NYC queer bar at 1am, just hours before the polls opened.
