Despite pleading guilty to a criminal charge a year earlier, now-former Des Moines Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts attested in an application for his state license that he had a clean criminal record. As part of his 2023 application to the state Board of Educational Examiners, which the Des Moines Register recently obtained, Roberts selected “no” in a section asking if he had ever been convicted of a crime “other than minor traffic offenses.” State Department of Education officials have said they are reviewing Des Moines schools' hiring practices, contending the district was responsible for verifying that Roberts was legally allowed to work in the United States. Des Moines schools officials, in turn, have pointed out that the BOEE, which was supposed to check Roberts' criminal background, gave him a superintendent's license.
