October is LGBTQ History Month. And history doesn’t just happen — it’s made. Here in Pittsburgh, that history cannot be told without naming Sisters PGH and People’s Pride PGH, founded and led by Ciora Thomas. We began in Pittsburgh in 2017, launching People’s Pride PGH as a protest-born alternative to corporate Pride — unapologetically centering Black, Brown, trans, and marginalized LGBTQIA people. For years, we carried that vision forward in the city. Then we expanded, organizing Swissvale Pride and Wilkinsburg Pride, bringing People’s Pride beyond the downtown streets and into our neighborhoods. And from there, the model spread. Other organizers — many of the very people hosting Pride events across our city, county, and even around the state today — drew from the blueprint we built.
