On this day, August 24, we celebrate the birth and brilliance of Marsha P. Johnson (1945–1992). A revolutionary spirit, drag mother, and fierce defender of those most cast aside, Marsha’s legacy remains a guiding light for all of us. She stood on the frontlines of the Stonewall Inn uprising, alongside Sylvia Rivera and so many others, sparking a movement that forever reshaped queer liberation. At SistersPGH, we now carry that flame inside our own Stonewall Inn here in Pittsburgh — a space built in the spirit of Marsha’s fight for safety, dignity, and chosen family. Just as she and Sylvia created STAR to house and care for homeless trans youth, our Stonewall Inn exists to provide housing, radical rest, mental health support, food, showers, and community care for our Trans siblings.
