This week’s #WorkoftheWeek is Martin Karplus’ photograph entitled “Girls Along Skyline (Rio de Janeiro) from 1960. Martin Karplus documented both life in Europe and later would travel throughout the Americas. While the location of his travels, and consequently his photographs, changed, his vision continued to emphasize humanity. Here, ten girls stand atop a wall overlooking the city and the ocean horizon. A small plane hangs low in the city air, in line with the clouds looming over the water. A backlit tree crookedly divides the picture into thirds. This serves to draw the viewer’s attention towards where the subjects appear to be staring: the city and the land stretching out beyond.
