On July 5, 1900, during the South African War, Sergeant Arthur Richardson, who took leave from the North-West Mounted Police to join Lord Strathcona’s Horse, performed an act of extraordinary bravery that earned him the Victoria Cross. Under intense enemy fire, Richardson rode back into danger to rescue a wounded comrade whose horse had been shot. His fearless actions saved a life and inspired generations to come.
