Next week, leaders from around the world will gather in Brazil for COP30 — the UN’s annual climate conference. It’s hard not to feel conflicted. A highway cut through the Amazon to make way for a climate summit, while others arrive by private jet to talk about sustainability. It’s easy to see the irony. But without COPs, there would be no real progress at all. This is where Indigenous Peoples, and those most affected by the climate crisis, get to have a voice. However imperfect, these conversations still matter. And let’s not forget the ocean. Covering over 70% of our planet, it produces more than half the oxygen we breathe and absorbs vast amounts of carbon — storing it in mangroves, seagrasses, and the deep sea. Ocean currents move heat and energy around the globe, shaping weather, while frozen seas at the poles reflect sunlight back into space. We cannot talk about climate without talking about the ocean.
