When I was a DJ on the radio in San Diego, I used to play “The World at Large” by Modest Mouse. I never got tired of it and its plaintive, melancholic feeling—it wasn’t until I started to learn it that I realized how poetic and deep a song it was. No other song has come close to capturing the myriad qualities of this strange, itinerant life. Whether you’re a touring musician, an artist, a loner, or someone who doesn’t fit into a prescribed mold, this song gets it.
