Singer Khalid has opened up about the experience of being outed and its impact on his music.
Appearing on Keke Palmer’s podcast ‘Baby, This Is Keke Palmer’, Khalid spoke about previously being closeted in the music industry and the impact that had on his psyche.
He said: “What didn’t work for me was the anxiety I had… my anxiety when I wasn’t out was extremely bad because I was almost anticipating being outed. I was living in fear.”
After Khalid was outed by his ex-boyfriend, Hugo D'Almonte, in November 2024 via social media, which led the singer to issue his own statement confirming his sexuality, Khalid said he’s been “extremely embraced by a new community”, even accumulating new fans.
His latest work embraces his queer identity, but Khalid also spoke on the podcast about how he has even been experimenting with changing pronouns from ‘she’ to ‘he’ in live performances of older songs like ‘Eastside’.
