MONARCHS EDGE LIONS: A down-to-the-wire struggle between the jserra.girlstennis team and Trinity League rival Mater Dei to open the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs went down to the final swing on Friday, with the Monarchs outlasting the Lions 76-75 on total games won after the two teams each claimed nine sets at MatchPoint Tennis Academy at Cabrillo Park in Santa Ana. The Lions finish the season with an overall record of 15-5. For the second time in 15 days, the two teams went swing-for-swing in a tense affair that saw each team claim three sets in all three rounds of action. JSerra led 53-48 on total games heading into the final round, but the Monarchs produced a 28-22 advantage in the final round to pull out the one-game victory.
