But when Hawke arrived for the screen test, Washington went completely off-script. “What Denzel was doing was trying to show other people he wanted somebody who could play with him,” Hawke explained. “He knew that whoever was cast in this part, he was gonna have- we’re together through the 92% of the whole movie.”
