What do grizzly bears have to do with the ocean? It might be more than you think. The ocean sustains life far beyond its shores, flowing through rivers, forests, and every link in between. As grizzly bears gather at the salmon buffet to fatten up before hibernation, they take the ocean with them, spreading marine nutrients through the forest and enriching the entire ecosystem. This cycle is still thriving in Bristol Bay, Alaska, home to the world’s largest and most abundant wild salmon fishery. Its success lies in pristine waters untouched by dams, mines, or salmon farms, a rarity that allows scientists to study Bristol Bay as a reference point for what a healthy ecosystem should look like. Ecosystems like this show us that protection and proper management are worth it — not just for nature itself, like these grizzlies, but for us too. When we care for the ocean, it returns that care in abundance, sustaining communities, economies, and life itself. Video by paulnicklen #GrizzlyB...
