October 25th is International Artist Day! With this said, we have to discuss the artist behind many of the engravings in our print shop. For today, Jared letterpress printed a hand carved woodcut of one of Lewis Winter’s business logos that was made about 130-135 years ago. This was printed with purple oil base ink using our Washington hand press. Lewis Winter was a woodcut artist and engraver, who had his business at 627 J Street from 1888 to 1910. After closing his business, he would go on to teach art at Sacramento High School until 1925. Lewis Winter passed away in January 1930. The Lewis Winter Collection was donated to the Center for Sacramento History in 2000 by Bill Gaylord, a former museum docent at the Sacramento History Museum.
