On October 22, 1843, Rancho Olompali was deeded to Camilo Ynitia by Alta California Governor Manuel Micheltorena. Camilo Ynitia was the Hoipu (headman) of the Coast Miwok Native people living at Olompali. The name Olompali comes from the Coast Miwok language meaning “Southern Village” or “Southern People.” Mariano Vallejo, the general of the Mexican Army on the northern frontier of California at Sonoma, aided Camilo in obtaining the 8,877 acre land grant on Miwok ancestral land in what is today Marin County, just outside of the City of Novato. In late June 1846, during the Bear Flag Revolt, an armed conflict took place at the adobe at Olompali where one Californio was killed and a few injured while the Bear Flaggers saved William Todd (the man credited for creating the original California Bear Flag that flew over Sonoma) from Mexican military custody.
