On October 16, 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the campus stadium at Sacramento State College. This is the location of what is today the Hornet Stadium at California State University, Sacramento. King was introduced at the stadium by California State Senator Mervyn M. Dymally. In his 35-minute speech, King spoke on the subject of economic justice for the lower class in the United States in a campaign later known as the Poor People’s Campaign of 1968. King also spoke on the subject of civil rights, unemployment and inequality in education for African Americans, and racial attacks on Black communities over the previous 18 months. Roughly 6,000 people attended this speech. This speech occurred less than six months before King’s assassination on April 4, 1968.
