September 28th is National Drink Beer Day! Sacramento has a rich beer history and our city has had a lot of breweries over the years. After all, Mark Twain once dubbed Sacramento the “City of Saloons.” No brewery is more iconic to Sacramento’s history than the Buffalo Brewing Company, which operated from 1890 to the 1940s. For today, Jared recreated and letterpress printed an advertisement for the Buffalo Brewing Company that was first published on June 24, 1897 in the Sacramento Daily Record-Union newspaper. The two cuts for this print are a row of barrels and a column of beer bottles are from the Lewis Winter Collection. However, we only have one of each of the cuts so being able to replicate the full ad in one impression is impossible. When it came to recreating the ad, it took about 3 hours to typeset the text in the closest typeface possible to the original, including the spacing. The fonts used were 12 and 18 point Deepdene.
