The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis’s appeal, leaving intact rulings that she violated the constitutional rights of same-sex couples by refusing to issue them marriage licenses in 2015. Davis, who cited her religious beliefs when denying the licenses, had argued that she should be immune from lawsuits because she was acting in accordance with her faith. Lower courts rejected that argument, ordering her to pay damages to the couples she turned away. Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff in the landmark 2015 Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, praised the court’s decision, calling it “another affirmation that love and equality win.” The refusal to revisit Davis’s case leaves Obergefell v. Hodges fully intact, reinforcing that public officials cannot use religion as justification to deny LGBTQ+ Americans equal rights under the law. #JimObergefell #USSupremeCourt #LGBTQIA #LGBTQRights #MarriageEquality #trumpadmin...
