James Uthmeier, Florida’s Attorney General, is demanding that the city of Pensacola cancel a scheduled 18+ Christmas drag show because he claims it features “demonic” and “s3xually explicit” elements, making it harmful for children — despite the show explicitly being for adults only. Uthmeier argued that the city should not “platform obscenities that denigrate its residents and expose kids to harmful content.” Performer Lexi Love, one of the drag artists named in Uthmeier’s letter, told The Advocate that much of the attorney general’s information “is outdated or just plain wrong.” Lexi went on to highlight the double standard in such criticisms: “If this were a nativity play and we were ‘men in dresses’ portraying the wisemen or angels, no one would bat an eye… Drag is art.
