Many rural mental health groups are seeing increased crisis calls to their hotlines. “I know more people are affected. I know the prices of everything get higher and higher and the stresses are added to it,” says Jolie Foreman, who runs Shelby County Cares, a Missouri nonprofit focused on addressing suicide among farmers. “Back in '22, if you calculated it out, it was averaging out to about a life every three months. And it was like, "This has to stop," says Foreman. “Shelby County had the highest rate of suicide per capita in the state of Missouri.” That number is now coming down, she says. If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255). For crisis support specific to agricultural communities, call or text 833-897-2474. #farmers #mentalhealth #ruralamerica #farming #mentalhealthresources
