Photos by lynseyaddario | Over the past 20 years, I’ve photographed wars across a dozen countries and traveled to more than 80. I’ve seen conflict up close and borne witness to a human cost that’s impossible to ignore. From famine in Somalia to displacement in Chad, from destruction in Sudan to the civilian toll in Ukraine, I’ve witnessed unbearable suffering, but also the power of the human spirit and resilience. To report on conflict is to tell stories with as many elements as possible: emotion, drama, composition, light. Sometimes a picture has to be beautiful for people to pay attention; a story has to be human for the message to translate. When I land in a town torn apart by conflict, I try to arrive with an open mind, and consider that these could be my own family under bombs or fleeing for their lives.
