Today in Paris, the trial of former Congolese warlord Roger Lumbala begins. He’s accused of crimes against humanity for his role in Operation “Effacer le Tableau” (“Erasing the Board”), a campaign of atrocities against civilians in Eastern DRC between 2002 and 2003. For 20+ years, survivors have waited for accountability. Now, France is pursuing the case under universal jurisdiction, which allows countries to prosecute war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity when justice isn’t delivered where the crimes occurred.
