At a press conference Monday, a coalition of California scientists and leaders, including state Sen. Scott Wiener, launched the campaign for the “Save Science, Save Lives” ballot measure. The measure would allow California to distribute funds from a pool of about $23 billion to scientific research programs that have been defunded by the federal government. The measure will be placed on the November 2026 ballot if SB 607, authored by Wiener and Assemblymember José Luis Solache Jr., passes the state legislature. In order to be passed, the bill requires two-thirds of the legislative votes, as well as a signature by Gov. Gavin Newsom. If passed by a majority of voters, the measure will create a $23 billion fund financed by the sale of state-issued government bonds. It will also establish an organization to distribute funds and a panel of experts to identify qualified recipients.
