October 28th is National Chocolate Day! This day is very fitting with Halloween approaching. For today, Howard letterpress printed an image from a woodcut, made about 130 years ago, from the Lewis Winter Collection. The print depicts a cacao pod, which contains cacao beans that are the raw ingredient for making chocolate. This was printed with purple oil base ink using a Washington hand press. Lewis Winter had a wood and photo engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910. Much of the cuts were designed for advertising in local Sacramento newspapers and magazines. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalChocolateDay #chocolate #printing #museum
