People with IDD are estimated to have a higher chance of developing diabetes compared to the general population due to factors such as genetics, inactive lifestyles, poor nutrition, and other health-related issues.
Research from a 2024 study indicates that participation in Special Olympics is linked to a 15% reduction in diabetes risk among Special Olympics athletes with IDD.
Through promoting physical activity, health screenings, and nutritional education, Special Olympics plays a critical role in minimizing health disparities and supporting the long-term health of this population.
