End of an era! The U.S. has officially stopped producing the penny after more than 230 years in circulation. πΊπΈ
Introduced in 1793, the 1-cent coin once bought candy or candles β but now costs nearly 4 cents to make. Treasurer Brandon Beach struck the final penny at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, calling it a move that will save taxpayers $56 million a year. π°
Billions of pennies are still out there and will remain legal tender, but no new ones will be made.
Farewell to the coin that reminded us to pick up a little luck! π
