The penny is suffering the same fate as the dodo bird or the eight-track player. After 238 years, the U.S. mint produced its last one-cent coin on Wednesday. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered the nation to stop making pennies, saying each one costs nearly 4 cents to produce. Other coins, including the nickel, dime, and quarter, will remain in circulation. Although the penny already seems obsolete to some consumers, its removal is causing problems for some merchants -- who will now have to round prices either up or down.
