After more than 40 years, a mystery from Silver Strand Beach has been solved! In May 1984, a jawbone was found along Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard. Despite extensive efforts, the remains could not be identified and were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as Ventura County John Doe (1984). Decades later, new forensic DNA technology provided a breakthrough. The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office partnered with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and Othram Labs in Texas, who used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing to build a comprehensive DNA profile. This led investigators to a long-cold case of a boating accident off the Ventura coast back in 1978. DNA from a relative confirmed the remains belonged to Donald Scott Reich, born in 1944, a 33-year-old professional organist who tragically drowned when his boat was destroyed by rough seas.
