From 6:22 to 9:37 pm on Friday, November 7th, I shot 2,578 photos at a Rutgers Volleyball match versus Michigan. These are my 20 favorite images, in chronological order. Some photography notes: I've been having fun with shutter drag! Volleyball player intros are a good time to practice the technique, since the lights dim and become red, so my flash can compete with the ambient light. Shutter drag is always a bit of a gamble — I never know what I’m going to get when I whip my camera around — and I’m quite happy with the results here. I threw a 2x teleconverter on my 400mm f2.8 for the first time, which is something I’ve wanted to try for a while. I believe four of these photos are shot with the teleconverter. Volleyball definitely isn’t the best sport for it (at least in this venue) since I lose a lot of light being at f5.6, but it worked great to get some reaction/celebration shots, where I can slow my shutter a bit. I’m excited to shoot baseball and softball at 800mm come spring.
