In 1893, Hawaiʻi was illegally annexed by the United States. Its language was banned, its culture suppressed, and its ancient connection to the ocean nearly lost. Then, in the 1970s, something happened that reignited a movement and brought Hawaiian culture back from the brink. Our co-founders, mitty and paulnicklen, had the opportunity to spend time with the man who has carried that flame for fifty years. Today, Mitty serves alongside him on the board of niatero, supporting Indigenous stewardship of nature around the world. What catalyzed the revival of Hawaiian culture?
