November 16th is National Button Day and we couldn’t think of a better idea than to print a phrase that appears in a lot of our print shop videos. For today, Jared letterpress printed the phrase, “Press the red button, Howard.” using 15 line pica (2.5 inches) wood type that was made in the late 1880s. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. For those wondering the origin of the phrase, “Press the red button, Howard,” it started over 4 years ago when Jared first asked Howard if roles could be reversed and he could print something for a video. While recording the video, Howard wondered how and when to stop recording.
