When it comes to letterpress printing, everything that one prints has to be 0.918 of an inch, also known as Type High. Because finding wood that fits that height requirement, sometimes woodcuts were recycled and a new engraving was made on the other side. We have some double sided woodcuts in our print shop at the Sacramento History Museum and we are highlighting one today because November 15th is National Recycling Day. For today, Howard letterpress printed both sides of a recycled woodcut from the Eleanor McClatchy Collection. The first side shows a building that we cannot identify and was partially recycled to be used for an image carved on the other side. We don’t know what the other side depicts, however. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #NationalRecyclingDay #recycle #recycling #woodcut #sachistorymuseum #sacramento #museum #history #printing #printingpress #letterpress #oldsacramento #printmaking
