A juvenile humpback whale stranded alive on the beach near Yachats drew overnight crowds and a frantic rescue effort this weekend. Marine mammal experts say its chances of survival are slim. As of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the whale was still alive after spending 24 hours on the shore. Its best chance of survival is to propel itself back to sea during tonight’s high tide at 10:33 p.m. But it’s a small tide — and experts say that’s highly unlikely.
