And the Meals on Wheels People don’t just stand at the entryway and hand her the food. The Lytles, who have been delivering meals weekly since the COVID pandemic, come in and put the food away. And they chat, catching up.
“It’s friends helping friends,” Barbara Johnson said. “I don’t know where I’d be if they didn’t have such a system. I really don’t.”
It’s these relationships that have kept the Lytles coming back to the resource center to pick up cooler bags of meals and food month after month. They deliver the same route every week – a wagon full of bags to several floors in the Union Manor, a subsidized senior living building, and then two more deliveries to a smaller apartment building, all in Southeast Portland, the neighborhood they live in.
