A humpback whale that spent Saturday tumbling in the surf off the coast near Yachats, tangled in fishing gear, and washed ashore alive and was still breathing as of 10 a.m., Sunday according to experts at the scene.
Photos and videos showed a crowd gathered in the middle of the night near the whale with phone flashlights, lanterns, blankets, shovels and wetsuits as people poured buckets of seawater over the animal. Multiple people on the scene alleged a bystander had managed to cut away fishing ropes or crab gear trapped on the animal. Some said the whale was vocalizing and others reported they could hear it “breathing hard.”
“She’s still fighting and trying to get out there!” Jaden Sequeira, who was at the beach overnight, posted on social media.
