The show, “¡Alebrijes!,” was part of Milagro’s 30th Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival. The annual festival includes the premiere of a new production, altar displays and community events coinciding with the Mexican holiday from Nov. 1-2. Milagro Theatre, a beneficiary of The Oregonian/OregonLive’s 2025 Season of Sharing holiday fundraising campaign, has been a cornerstone of Portland’s arts and culture scene since 1985, when José Eduardo González y Salazar founded what was then known as ARTPAZ, a theater group. He and his wife, Dañel Malán, eventually pivoted to El Centro Milagro and established the nonprofit as Oregon’s premier Latino arts, culture and heritage center. González and Malán began producing theater under the name Miracle Theater Group, or Milagro in Spanish, out of a desire to create art that reflected and uplifted Portland’s Latino community.
