The first time Ashley Campbell warned her child about the possibility of being bullied was because of a navy blue suit. A month before a father-daughter dance, Campbell brought her then 5-year-old to a thrift store to buy a dress. Miles, as he would call himself a decade later, insisted on a suit instead.
Campbell agreed if they could find a second-hand one that fit. They found three, settling on the navy blue suit and a tie with light blue stripes. But Campbell cautioned that some people might not be kind about the clothing choice.
Miles Phipps' family never could have predicted how bad the bullying would get. Or the tragedy that would result.
On Nov. 4, the 15-year-old died by suicide — a day after Campbell says a substitute teacher at Urbandale High School refused to use Miles' preferred pronouns. Eleven months earlier, Miles told his family he was transgender.
