Radio is the debut studio album by #LLCoolJ, released on November 18, 1985 through Def Jam Recordings, marking the label’s first-ever LP release. A breakthrough moment for both LL and the rising Def Jam movement, the album became a major commercial success for hip-hop at the time. Radio peaked at No. 6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 46 on the Billboard 200, moving over 500,000 copies in its first five months. By 1989, it was officially certified Platinum by the RIAA. Powered by LL Cool J’s raw charisma and Rick Rubin’s stripped-down, hard-hitting production, the album captured the energy of the new-school era and the ghettoblaster culture that defined mid-’80s America. Radio didn’t just introduce a star, it helped shape the sound and attitude of hip-hop’s future.
