At LCCR, we stand with kids in the legal system no matter what. Children in New Orleans and across the state are transferred to adult court for certain felonies and given adult criminal sentences. ⁠ ⁠ Accountability is important, but if the method leads to more harm than good and worse outcomes for both kids and communities, what was really accomplished? ⁠ ⁠ Regardless of the accusations against a child, no child should be tried in adult court. The evidence against it speaks louder than the opinions in its favor.⁠ ⁠ If we truly want to feel safer in our own communities, we need to support and show our kids how to be part of them in the healthiest way possible, not force them out and expect them to grow up into better adults. Especially not when the adults in their lives locked them up and tried to throw away the key.⁠ ⁠ Please, do better.
