Today marks 222 years since the Battle of Vertières (Batay Vètyè), which we honor and celebrate on November 18 as the final battle and victorious breakthrough of the Haitian Revolution. This victory made Haiti an independent nation, the first free Black republic, and a catalyst for freedom movements worldwide. November 18 also reflects the strength of our present reality while Haiti’s national men’s team stands on the verge of returning to the World Cup stage for the first time since 1974.
