🔬 Research in action! When Oceana heads out on an expedition, every dive brings us closer to understanding—and protecting—our oceans. On our trip to California’s Channel Islands, we’re using two main tools to study ocean life: 🪢 Transect surveys: By following a line along the seafloor and recording the species we see, we can compare habitats, track changes over time, identify unique communities and assess ocean health. 🧪 Water sampling: Once back on shore, Oceana partner Dr. Adrian Munguia-Vega brings the samples he collected with us back to his lab to analyze for environmental DNA, or eDNA. This helps us detect thousands of animals of all shapes and sizes that have recently passed through the area—even if we never saw them!
