The term "bodhisattva" is defined as a being devoted to achieving enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. The Sanskrit term literally translates to "enlightenment being" or "awakened being" and refers to someone who has achieved a high level of spiritual awakening but chooses to postpone their own final nirvana to help others achieve enlightenment instead.
