You might have heard
@kaukau_pdx described as an “elevated” Hawaiian restaurant thanks to the time owners Brandon and Tracee Hirahara spent at top Portland restaurants Eem and Langbaan. But the term is misleading. Kau Kau isn’t some James Beard Award-baiting take on modern Hawaiian food.
Instead, the Hiraharas draw more inspiration from Oahu’s chain diners, plate lunch specialists and mom-and-pop cafes. This is local food with locals in mind.
