Did you know dolphins aren’t exclusive to the tropics?
These are Pacific white-sided dolphins, commonly seen along the coast of British Columbia. They travel in pods that can reach 1,000 individuals and are found as far north as Alaska!
The problem with common species is that they’re harder to secure funding to study. Resources are limited, so threatened species usually get priority, leaving a major knowledge gap. We know very little about some of the most abundant animals in our waters, even though they likely play an important role in the ecosystem and influence threatened species.
Our friends at oceansinitiative published a new study that found Pacific white-sided dolphins carry multiple diseases, many resistant to antibiotics, near dense clusters of open net salmon farms. The findings raise important questions about how salmon farms may affect the marine environment and how these pathogens could reach threatened species like the Southern Resident Killer Whale.
