A self-portrait by the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, has sold at auction in New York for more than $54.7m (£41.8m). It shatters the auction record for an artwork by a woman. The work, titled El sueño (la cama), which is translated to The dream (The bed) was painted in 1940 and depicts the artist lying in bed, with a skeleton resting on a canopy above. The self-portrait is one of Kahlo's "psychologically charged" artworks, auction house Sotheby's said. It was painted during a turbulent chapter in her life - the year her former lover was assassinated, and shortly after her divorce and remarriage.
