Howard’s literary excellence shines! At the 2025 Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Awards, Sarai Johnson (B.A. ’14) earned the Zora Award for Debut Fiction and a $20,000 prize for her novel Grown Women, exploring four generations of Black women and their journeys through motherhood, trauma and healing. Recent graduate Becca Haynesworth (B.A. ’25) won the College Writers Award for her afro-futuristic short story “Fly’n Home,” which follows a supernatural quest set in 19th-century South Carolina. Both writers credit literary icons like Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright and see their wins as affirmation to pursue their craft. Their achievements continue Howard’s long legacy of creative and intellectual excellence. Read More On The Dig: Link in bio #HowardUniversity #HurstonWright #BlackLiterature
