🏔️ Glaciers lost 450 gigatons of water in 2024. This is enough to form a block of ice 7 km tall, 7 km wide, and 7 km deep or to fill 180 million Olympic swimming pools. This single year of meltwater also added 1.2 mm to global sea levels, increasing flood risks for hundreds of millions of people living in coastal zones. 💧 As highlighted by the #StateOfWater 2024 Report, the water cycle is no longer steady - it's swinging between extremes. Glacier retreat also leads to extreme events and new disaster risks for downstream populations, such as glacier lake outburst floods, landslides and accelerated erosion and sedimentation.
