Hot off the press is a special greeting card for a variety of occasions to let the recipient know to take the opportunity while they have the chance! In this video, Jared letterpress printed greeting cards with PMS 7533c rubber base ink using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop press. The electrotype (copy of a woodcut) is from the Lewis Winter Collection. This print depicts a couple blacksmiths team striking and an apprentice observing. This was made in the 1890s at Lewis Winter’s wood and photo engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento, California. The text above the image is a very popular idiom that has its origins in blacksmithing. “Strike while the iron is hot!” was typeset in 30 point Caslon font. The back of the card includes an image of a Washington hand press and the words “Printed at the Sacramento History Museum.” Sixty cards were printed on this press run and these cards are available in our museum store and website. #blacksmith #blacksmithing #idioms #typograph...
