Sewage overflow continues to threaten public health and livelihoods in Downtown Kingston and city officials say poor garbage disposal is a major part of the problem.
KSAMC City Engineer Xavier Chavans says clogged drains caused by improper waste dumping are worsening an already strained sewer system, leading to frequent overflows in busy commercial areas. He is urging the National Water Commission (NWC) to urgently upgrade the aging sewer network to meet the needs of the city.
Fish vendors in the area say the situation is unbearable, noting that the stench and constant pooling of wastewater are driving customers away and putting their businesses at risk.
